Training Wheels

aha moment jae m rang Apr 28, 2025

It’s spring … which means the blades, boards and bikes are out in full force!  The trails are full of young families enjoying weather more conducive to riding as well as one another’s company.

Did you have training wheels when you were a kid?  I bought them for my son’s first two-wheeler.

Training wheels are wonderful in their intention. They give us balance before we find our own.
They offer confidence while our legs wobble and our courage unstable.  It’s like they’re saying, “I’ve got you!”

But what when is the right time to take them off?  For my son it was about 35 seconds, for others I could be months. Could the very thing that helped us stay upright become the thing that holds us back?

Aha! ~ Know when it’s time to ride free

Training wheels don’t allow you to lean into turns. They limit speed, fluidity, and the real feel of the ride. Eventually, they become less of a safety net and more of a crutch.

Life’s training wheels show up in the job we stay in because it feels safe, the routine we won’t disturb because it feels comfortable, even the people we lean on when we’re perfectly capable of standing tall all by ourselves.

And then there are the stories we tell ourselves about not being ready. Yikes!

Support is sacred. But overstaying in support can become self-sabotage in disguise.

There’s a time for guidance—and there’s a time for grit.  Growth begins where training wheels end.

If you want to achieve something different you need to do things differently. In Human U we’ll illuminate those hidden training wheels that are keeping us grounded.  Join us!
