Time-suckers and Dream-stealers

aha moment jae m rang Apr 06, 2026

Have you ever walked into the kitchen to grab a pen…at which point you remembered you had eggs boiling…picked up your phone to book a haircut…passed the laundry and realized it never made it to the dryer…heard the reminder that you have 15 minutes to get ready for your meeting …then stood there wondering, why did I come in here in the first place?

It’s almost comical—until you realize how often it happens.

We were told that electronics would make life easier - more efficient, more convenient - and in many ways, they have.  However, they have also expanded the number of things competing for our attention. Emails. Texts. Notifications. Tabs. Tasks. Alerts. So instead of doing less, we’re managing more.

And somewhere along the way, we started wearing “multitasking” like a badge of honor. Let’s pause on multitasking for a minute since it’s not a real thing.  The brain doesn’t actually do multiple things at once—it rapidly switches amongst tasks. You think you can be on a webinar, answer text messages and load an Excel but in reality, you’re shifting in split-second intervals, and yes, that comes with a cost.

Multitasking reduces efficiency, increases errors, elevates stress hormones (like cortisol), drains mental energy,y and over time, can even impact memory and decision-making.  In other words, we feel busy, but we’re not necessarily productive; hence, finding yourself in the kitchen and not knowing why.

Do you feel like you’re constantly in motion but not always in meaningful progress?

First, let’s zoom out on some popular distractions:

Scrolling for “just a minute” that turns into twenty.
Saying yes to every call, message, or interruption—like you’re on an unspoken open-door policy with the world.
Starting your day without a clear priority, so you end up reacting instead of leading.
Doing everything yourself, even when there are tools, systems, or support that could free up your time.
Letting the evening disappear into background noise like meaningless TV—not because you chose it, but because you defaulted to it.

So, maybe the question isn’t “Where did my time go?” but “Did my time go where I intended it to?”  Which brings us to the real question:  “What is my centerpiece?

Aha! ~ Every distraction is a decision to delay what actually matters.

Clarity on your centerpiece with some overarching rules to protect it, helps identify with what matters most at that particular time then giving it your full presence.

Does it mean ignoring your responsibilities? Absolutely not. Can priorities shift often? Absolutely.  But you only ever get 24 hours in a day – no more, no less – and time doesn’t rewards intention.

You can use time to create, build, align … or ….scatter it across low-value noise which makes distractions not only time-suckers but dream-stealers.

How would it feel to

  • Finish what you start
  • Give your full attention to a single task
  • Create completion instead of constant carryover?

Pie in the sky?  Not even close.

You see, this isn’t about having more time. It’s about stepping up to take control of where your time goes.

Because the truth is you don’t find focus. You choose it.

Protect your dream.

Bob Proctor used to always say that time and money are not valid reasons to avoid accomplishments.  You can always find time and money when your priorities are aligned with your dream.  We’ll expand on that on our Momentum Accelerator call in Human U.  Email me [email protected] for the link to join Wednesday at 4:30 eastern.
