The Song That’s Stuck in Your Head
Aug 25, 2025Are you a music-lover? Do you walk around humming songs and reciting lyrics?
Music is a universal language and can speak equally to everyone. But what about the story the song sings? Can that move you … or even an entire population?
Some music artists write albums that coincide with what they’re experiencing in their lives so you feel their pain, heart ache and victories with each release. (They say if you play country music songs backwards, the wife comes back, the dog comes back … )
Most people will be attracted to a specific genre because of the language, subject matter, sound and presentation because something about the package resonates. Some fans will not only memorize the songs and buy the albums, they’ll mimic the hairstyle, dress and behaviour of their favourite artists with a sense of belonging.
But what is the impact of singing those songs over and over again? Can the repetition of the message create an autopilot conditioning?
Aha! ~ Life is a song. If you’re not happy with the lyrics, maybe it’s time to change the station.
There are three ways to engrain learning. The first one is repetition. Can you guess the other two? Yep – repetition and repetition.
And because we naturally learn through imitation – monkey see, monkey do – whatever is played consistently on our radio, through our television, at our churches, grocery stores and workplace is what will fashion our mood, our thinking and ultimately our behaviour.
And deeper, since we attract what we think about, it behooves us to loop songs in with self-talk and affirmations as they all play a part in our conditioned behaviour.
Life is always humming along in the background, whether you notice it or not. The good news is you get to choose the lyrics and the rhythm. If you don’t like the tune that’s playing, swap it out for words and melodies that lift you higher. After all, your life’s soundtrack is being written one chorus at a time—make sure it’s a song worth singing on repeat.
