The Cost of Living

What’s your price?

Your cost of living…or should I say, the cost of choosing?

Remember a few years ago when some pilots refused the shot and lost their careers? A massive price to pay but the cost of compromising their health was higher. And the airlines? They paid too—fewer pilots, disrupted schedules, and eventually, legal consequences. Travelers paid with delays, cancellations, uncertainty and higher prices.

Nothing is isolated. Every choice creates a rippling effect.

Some politicians are crossing the floor—blue to red – what was the price to make them switch?
And what does it cost the people who trusted them to stand where they once stood?

Even something as simple as water proves the point. At home, where water is plentiful, you won’t pay a dollar for a bottle. At the airport, dehydrated, you’ll hand over $6.50 without hesitation. Same water. Different value.

I used to run an exercise on stage.

Imagine a plank, two feet off the ground—everyone invited to, walked across. Raise it three stories? No one moves. Offer a million dollars? Still no one. But tell them their child is on the other side? You bet they walked.

So, what changed?  The risk didn’t. The reward didn’t. The value did.

Aha! ~ You don’t avoid hard decisions because the price is too high. You avoid them because the reason isn’t strong enough—yet.

If you’re standing at a crossroads asking yourself, “What’s it going to cost me?” remember that playing where you are, has a price.  Playing it safe has a price.  Doing what everyone else is doing has a price.  Ignoring the pull to grow, to change, to step forward … has a price.

Here is a better question: What will it cost me if I don’t?

Don’t let the moment make the decision for you. What feels real right now is often just what’s immediate—not what’s meaningful. Play it out. Follow the path a little further down the road. The deeper thinking takes effort, but so does living with regret.

And don’t be afraid when the Universe makes the choice for you.  A few years ago, my friend, a practicing physician, was put on leave.  During that time, she studied and recertified expanding her knowledge beyond traditional medicine.  Last year she handed in her license for a life fueled by time and money freedom. It was a series of choices she didn’t see coming. She just made one at a time with her value at the forefront, and now she never stops smiling.

Your best life carries a higher price tag…and it’s worth every ounce of consideration and effort.

Time is either spent or it’s invested.
Same hours. Different life. You get to choose.

Know that you’re always only one Aha! away from living your best life.
