I Can Be Trusted
Sep 28, 2026Lately I’ve been reaching out to those who have joined me in our wellness practice asking, “What is your goal here?” so that I know exactly how to help or mentor them.
But the ask has felt hollow.
Not because goals are wrong. But because "goals" puts the focus out there, on some future finish line, on something you either hit or miss. And when you miss, the story you tell yourself is that you failed. Which, if you've been studying the mind as long as I have, is the last story you want reinforcing itself in your subconscious.
So, I’ve switched up that conversation.
Now I ask something different: "What irrevocable promise do you want to make to yourself about your own expansion here?"
Often silence follows.
But here’s the thing: a promise is different than a goal. A promise lives inside you. It doesn't belong to a spreadsheet or a vision board or anyone else's expectations. It belongs to you, in private, where your future is actually being built.
Here’s what I’ve lived watching my own patterns with unflinching honesty: transformation is not a knowledge problem.
You already know what you need to do.
You know you need to get up earlier. Finish what you started. Have the hard conversation. Take the walk. Put down the distraction. You know. And yet.
Alan Watt said it plainly: you can understand discipline and still choose distraction. You can know something is hurting you and still return to it. You can be completely clear on what needs to change and spend another year living beneath what you're capable of.
So, if knowledge isn't the answer, what is?
Aha! ~ Transformation happens through evidence.
Not motivation. Not a perfect morning. Not waiting until you feel ready, because if you've been waiting for ready, you already know how that story goes.
Evidence is what you build one kept promise at a time.
Wake up when you said you would. That's evidence. Take the walk when you don't feel like it. Evidence. Finish the thing nobody is watching you finish. Evidence. Ignore the distraction and write the blog. Evidence. Every time you do what you said you would do, you send a signal to the deepest part of yourself: I can be trusted. That’s huge.
While we’re here, let’s reframe the word “discipline”, too, because discipline has a reputation problem. For most people discipline sounds like restriction. Rules. Something imposed outside you that tells you what you can and can’t have.
That’s not discipline. That’s compliance.
Real discipline is something you choose. It's the building block, not the bars. It's the promise you make in private that shapes the person who shows up in public. It's what remains when motivation has gone home for the day and you still sit down to do the work. Keeping your promises and building trust are the real building blocks to personal sovereignty.
So that shift, from goals to promises, from compliance to commitment, from external finish lines to internal evidence, is what I now bring to every conversation with the members in my organization, my affiliates, and collaborators.
I don't ask what they want to achieve. I ask who they want to become. And then I remind them, because sometimes we all need reminding: you are more than capable. The only thing standing between who you are and who you are becoming is the promises you are willing to make, and keep, in private.
Your future self is not a stranger waiting somewhere in the distance. Your future self is being shaped right now, in the ordinary moments nobody applauds.
Promises kept build trust. Trust builds evidence. Evidence shapes transformation.
Be your word.
It’s the part about teaching yourself to trust yourself that’s worthy of a reread. Let’s talk more at 5:00 pm Wednesday in Humna U. email me [email protected] for the link to join.
